Cheech Marin is one of the most beloved and enduring figures in American entertainment – a multi-generational star whose career defies easy categorization. Best known as one half of the hilariously irreverent, counter-culture comedy duo Cheech & Chong, he is an actor, director, writer, musician, humanitarian, and today the world’s foremost advocate for Chicano art. As Marin himself puts it, he is “a man who has enough talent, humor, and intelligence to do just about anything.”
Born Richard Marin in South Central Los Angeles, Cheech partnered with Tommy Chong to become entertainment gold. Six of their albums went gold, four were Grammy-nominated, and Los Cochinos won the 1973 Grammy for Best Comedy Recording. The duo starred in eight films together, including the era-defining Up in Smoke. Cheech went on to a prolific solo career – writing, directing, and starring in Born in East L.A., stealing scenes in Tin Cup, co-starring on CBS’s Nash Bridges, and appearing in Lost and Jane the Virgin. His voice is instantly recognizable from Disney and Pixar classics including Oliver & Company, The Lion King, and the Cars franchise.
Beyond the screen, Cheech spent decades building what is now widely regarded as the finest private collection of Chicano art in the world. His landmark exhibition Chicano Visions broke attendance records on a 15-city museum tour, and in 2022 that lifelong passion culminated in the opening of The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture in Riverside, California – the first museum in North America dedicated exclusively to Chicano art. His rallying cry, “Chicano art is American art,” has reshaped how the art world understands a movement long overlooked.
On stage, Cheech brings the same wit, warmth, and cultural insight that have made him a household name for more than fifty years. Whether reflecting on a remarkable life in comedy and film, championing representation and cultural identity, or making the case for the transformative power of art, he delivers a one-of-a-kind experience: funny, disarming, and deeply human – a living bridge between counterculture and the cultural mainstream whose story resonates with every generation.
