Dan Buettner is an American explorer, journalist, longevity researcher, and the founder of the Blue Zones – the five regions of the world where people live the longest, healthiest lives. Born June 18, 1960 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Dan graduated from the University of St. Thomas in 1983 with a BA in Spanish and Literature, then went on to set three Guinness World Records for transcontinental cycling (Americastrek across the Americas in 1986, Sovietrek around the 45th parallel in 1990, and Africatrek from Tunisia to South Africa in 1992).
In the early 2000s, Dan partnered with National Geographic and the National Institute on Aging to research the world’s longevity hotspots. He was awarded an NIA grant and, working alongside demographer Michel Poulain, identified and confirmed the five Blue Zones – Sardinia (Italy), Okinawa (Japan), Loma Linda (California), Nicoya Peninsula (Costa Rica), and Ikaria (Greece) – in his cover story for National Geographic Magazine’s November 2005 edition, ‘Secrets of Long Life.’ His Blue Zones work has since become one of the most popular features ever published by National Geographic and The New York Times Magazine.
Dan is a 5x #1 New York Times bestselling author. His books include The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest (2008), Thrive: Finding Happiness the Blue Zones Way (2010), The Blue Zones Solution (2015), The Blue Zones of Happiness (2017), the Blue Zones Challenge (2021), the New York Times bestselling cookbook The Blue Zones Kitchen (2019), The Blue Zones American Kitchen (2022), The Blue Zones Secrets for Living Longer (2023), and The Blue Zones Kitchen One Pot Meals (2025).
Dan is the host and co-producer of the Netflix docuseries Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones (2023), which became a #1 hit on the platform and won three 2024 Daytime Emmy Awards (Directing, Music Direction, and Sound). His TED talk ‘How to Live to Be 100+’ has more than 4.7 million views.
Through Blue Zones, LLC (founded 2008, acquired by Adventist Health in 2020) and partnerships with Healthways, Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and Texas Health Resources, Dan has implemented Blue Zones Projects in 70+ communities including Albert Lea (MN), the Beach Cities (CA), Fort Worth (TX), the State of Iowa, Naples (FL), South Bend (IN), and Klamath Falls (OR – a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation ‘Culture of Health’ prize winner). The Albert Lea project alone added three years to average life expectancy and cut city-worker healthcare costs by 40%, with results Harvard’s Dr. Walter Willett called ‘stunning.’
Dan has appeared on Oprah, The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, Good Morning America, NPR, and CNN. He has keynoted at TEDMED, Google Zeitgeist, the Aspen Institute, and the Davos World Economic Forum (where he was named ‘One of the Best of Davos’ in 2018), and spoken to organizations including President Bill Clinton’s Global Initiative, Morgan Stanley, Capital Blue Cross, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota, the University of Pennsylvania, Target, Zappos, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, Northwestern, and Lake Nona. To date, he has spoken in more than 18 countries on six continents.
